TELLING THE STORIES OF THE BOREAL FOREST ONE PIECE OF ART AT A TIME!
Our Philosophy
Our work begins with the trees of Michigan — each one carrying its own story.
We source only from trees that have fallen naturally or reached the end of their life, allowing the forests around us to thrive. By honoring what nature has already given, we create pieces that are both environmentally responsible and deeply meaningful — furniture with roots, memory, and purpose.
Meet the Artist
Stories in Grain was founded by Shawn Anderson, whose belief in the connection between design, nature, and community shapes every piece he creates. His work begins with the raw beauty of wood — a live-edge slab of spalted maple, or a stump sculpted by years of wind and rain — each one revealing how it longs to be used and preserved.
Trained through a traditional craftsman apprenticeship, Shawn carries forward methods rarely taught today. From his family’s farm in Albion, Michigan, he applies those time-honored techniques to create furniture that feels alive — functional works of art that honor the tree’s story and bring a sense of harmony to the spaces they inhabit.
